$75,000 in Labor and Materials Donated
April 18, 2017; Strongsville Ohio: The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades District Council 6 (IUPAT) is partnering with the AFL-CIO, United Way of Central Ohio, Bank of Labor, and Franklin County contractor Kendrick Mollenauer Painting to rehab three cutting edge nonprofit addiction treatment services; The Absolute House in Cleveland Ohio, The Freeman House in Columbus Ohio, and Brighton Recovery Center for Women in Florence Kentucky. In total, approximately $75,000 in Labor and Materials will be donated by over 40 IUPAT members on Saturday April 22nd, the IUPAT Day of Community Action. The support is part of a district-wide initiative to focus union resources towards fighting the opioid epidemic.
“IUPAT DC6 is committed to making a positive impact in the communities in which we live and work,” said Jim Sherwood, Business Manager Secretary/Treasurer for IUPAT DC6. “Both Ohio and Kentucky have been hit hard by the opioid epidemic, we wanted to focus our resources to help treatment services that are on the front lines of the war against addiction.”
Giving back to the community isn’t new for IUPAT DC6, in 2016 they also coordinated $75,000 in Labor and Materials to 3 local nonprofit organizations on their Day of Community Action.
Cleveland area IUPAT Members will be rehabbing 19 – 25 suites with drywall and paint to convert a former convent into a sober living facility for The Absolute House, whose mission is providing the education, housing, and employment resources that empower men struggling with alcohol and drug abuse to conquer addiction and maintain sobriety.
In Columbus, IUPAT members will be helping sex trafficking victims regain their lives by rehabbing a donated house that will be the first brick and mortar facility for The Freeman House, a nonprofit that provides a sanctuary for recovery through a continuum of care, building trusting relationships that last, while living a clean and sober lifestyle. Once completed, the Freeman House will be home to 6 – 8 women who will receive supportive services necessary so they don’t have to return to their old lifestyle to survive.
The Brighton Recovery Center’s sober living house in Florence Kentucky will receive a significant facelift, thanks to local IUPAT members who will be painting and patching all the common living areas in the building, along with the bathrooms. Brighton is a 100-bed facility located in Boone County that utilizes recovery dynamics curriculum and a peer-driven model of recovery that helps women recover from chronic substance abuse and addiction, and move toward a life of sobriety and productivity.
The IUPAT Community Action Day begins at 7:AM on Saturday, April 22nd and is concluded whenever the projects are done. Local IUPAT members volunteer their time towards the projects, which are always focused on IUPAT’s home communities.
