April 12, 2017: District Council 6 of the International Union of Painters & Allied Trades (IUPAT) has chosen the Florence nonprofit organization Brighton Recovery Center for Women (Brighton) as the recipient of their 2017 Day of Community Action on April 22nd. The move reinforces a District-wide effort to support organizations that are on the cutting edge of fighting the opioid epidemic. Union members will be patching and painting the facilities bathrooms and common areas, including the living and dining rooms.
Brighton Recovery Center for Women is a 100-bed facility located in Boone County that utilizes recovery dynamics curriculum and is a peer-driven model of recovery, a program that helps women recover from chronic substance abuse and addiction, and move toward a life of sobriety and productivity. The focus is to help the women change their behavior, skills, and attitudes related to their addictive lifestyles.
“We were extremely impressed by Brighton’s impact last year,” said Lee Denney, Business Representative for IUPAT and project coordinator. “The organization helped over 340 women battle addiction, 53% of which reported no relapse in the 6 months after completing phase one of treatment. That’s a much higher success rate that is commonly reported in addiction treatment.”
IUPAT DC6 members from Locals 123, 238, and 387 have already committed to the project, which has an anticipated value of $4,000 to Brighton.
